Gehe Pharma Handel GmbH,
Landshut Project
May 20,
2004
The economic success of wholesalers depends
on fast, on-time distribution and highest delivery
quality. The faster the growth of a company, the
more challenging it becomes to meet such high
demands. Logistics processes must be evaluated
again and designed to easily accommodate future
high growth - at the same time continuing daily
operations.
If the wholesaler is in the pharmaceutical industry,
requirements are even more diffi-cult: up to 5
deliveries per day, short order times, fast order
processing and high product rates characterise
this business. "Our competitive advantage
lies in custom-tailored management and modern
logistics. "Our goal is fast and reliable
deliveries", explains Turan Karakaya, logistics
director at Gehe Pharma Handel GmbH. "We
have intensely invested in new, modern distribution
centres in the past years in order to master the
increasing requirements".
Economic growth - new logistic requirements
Economic success is the reason the expansion
of the existing branch in Landshut - near Munich
- became necessary. Existing automated warehouse
systems were over 10 years old and the warehouse
had already been modified several times. Last
year we decided on a long-term solution and an
overall expansion of the warehouse. The Gehe Pharma
Handel GmbH had clear goals: Fast throughput times
for more than 75,000 in store articles and fast,
safe and transparent order processing. SSI Schäfer
PEEM, leading provider of economic solutions for
warehousing, conveying and picking technology,
was contracted to undertake the refurbishment.
"We devel-oped various projects with the
logistics specialist from Graz and have a high
regard for their experience and know-how."
Besides that, we wanted a provider that solves
it all, from design to planning, execution and
start-up", said Turan Karakaya explaining
the choice of the provider.
Solution
Based on the existing warehouse processes, the
goal of the project was to optimise order handling
capacity and quality by using a high degree of
automation. Processes like picking preparation,
insertion of notes, most of the picking, labelling,
insertion of invoices, check-weighing and finally
lidding, are now handled automatically. Slow moving
products, or products with specific dimensions
or packages, are still picked manually. A separate
refrigerated area, as well as different solutions
for special prod-ucts, were naturally considered
while designing the system.
The automatic picking system for fast and medium
movers (products that have high and medium order
rates) handles approximately 14,000 products.
An average of 15,000 channels with a dispensing
speed of 1-4 items/second achieve an automation
degree of about 65%.
Except for the dispatch area, the new warehouse
solution had to be designed so it could be incorporated
into the existing building.
Results
The high automation degree achieved, the high
throughput rates and the high deliv-ery quality
simultaneously lowered the error rates per thousand.
It was possible to carry out the retrofit and
warehouse modification in stages, during normal
operations. "The new, need-based logistics
solution allows us to provide high quality delivery
standards to our customers. "The investment
is recovered in a short time and we keep a durable,
future-oriented warehouse solution that is ready
for future sales in-creases", noted Turan
Karakaya with satisfaction.
